Why some KJ's don't believe in a tip jar.....

by Ozz on 07/13/13

Many peeps ask me where's my tip jar.......here's my standard answer...the bar pays me to be here give it to the wait staff...here's my reasons $2!! my hourly is more than that and that's bout what servers get. The rest is from what you leave and yes folks that's how they get paid by WHAT YOU LEAVE! So why would I want to take that away from the wait staff? Secondly tip jar promotes song rotationproblems! Just cause you walk in pop me a five and think your next is not gonna happen! Show up early and become part of the family then you will be next! I don't mind if you tip my DJs but don't give me one and don't expect rotation help.....sorry for the rant but I'm bugged by poor tipping to a great wait staff! Ps $20 for a night out of fun at karaoke is cheap so if your a non drinker and drink Pepsi like I do leave a twenty to the server you took a table that they could have made that $20 serving drinks! And lastly all you DJs out there quit being greedy and put that tip jar away you got paid! Lol  (Teles from Live Mic)

My final comment on the tip jar is this. When you are an owner of a karaoke company you get full pop. When you are an employee you only get a portion, and really, it's not that much. I think you should support the venue first, and spend at least $3 per hour. You should tip the server at least 20% (Provided the service warrants it). Then tip the KJ. If everyone in a night did this and tipped the KJ $1 for each song sung each singers would spend $15 +. That would make everyone happy.

I have always left a tip jar out. Those who want to, tip, knowing full well that their tip doesn't get them a special place in line. But I do a lot of extras for my regulars (I throw them birthday parties, sing harmonies, pick their songs, give them swag) and they show me their appreciation by tipping. They also tip the servers. I have also always said that $5 is a tip, $20 is a bribe :-).
