Delfino Joel Montoya Depends on the person that you're talking to. Amos at Effing Bar manages to do a nice job with that, just like my KJ friends William Reimer and Ryan Simmons in the LBC.

Jason W Brooks I don't like it. I go to karaoke to sing. I like it when the KJ does as much as possible to get as many singers in ... and I like it when KJs step out of the rotation themselves....even if the KJ is a very talented entertainer. Keep the singing going.
3. Kara said on 5/31/13 - 02:00PM
Kara Wraase Tirone Agree with Jay..you are only there for three or four hours...at my job I wouldn't get a break...neither does the serving staff...
4. Michael said on 5/31/13 - 02:00PM
Michael Salazar It takes up the valuable time to get more people in. Sadly I only know a few KJs that would actually take themselves out of the rotation unless its extremely slow and they need to fill space or have nobody else signed up. I came to sing and when they play music, that destroys the purpose of karaoke.
5. Sandi said on 5/31/13 - 02:02PM
Sandi McDaniels Personally, I think throwing in a line dance between sets is a fun way get everyone interacting on the floor.....
6. Nikki said on 5/31/13 - 02:02PM
Nikki Rayzin It has it's place. Better than silence while it takes people to get to the mic.
7. Ozz said on 5/31/13 - 02:03PM
Billy Beare Callmeozz Net Big difference between musical fill in to avoid silence and playing an entire song. Every song played is one song that someone could have sung. That's the complaint I hear all the time.
8. Nikki said on 5/31/13 - 02:03PM
Nikki Rayzin The only time I really hear whole songs is for some god awful line dancing. The other full songs are when there are under maybe six in the rotation.
9. Nikki said on 5/31/13 - 02:04PM
Nikki Rayzin Or if there aren't enough people signed up by start time.
10. Sandi said on 5/31/13 - 02:04PM
Sandi McDaniels I guess it depends on where you are.. I go to 2 different American legion Halls for karaoke and the people request The Line dancing and the floor is totally crowded...
11. Nikki said on 5/31/13 - 02:05PM
Nikki Rayzin Guess if it was a line dancing bar that'd be great, I go for karaoke. Not watching a bunch of people fail at simple songs.
12. Nikki said on 5/31/13 - 02:05PM
Nikki Rayzin Simple line dancing songs*
13. Michael said on 5/31/13 - 02:06PM
Michael Salazar I don't mind part of a song for fill. It actually amps me up sometimes. Also fills the void. But not a full song.

Kammo's Karaoke You guys do understand that as a DJ/KJ we are hired to try to keep as many people at the establishment as possible right? This means if we keep 20 people there to sing, and 20 people there that like the dance music, that is 40 people spending money and keeping our job secure instead of only 20 singers hopefully drinking... I understand that karaoke people are there for one reason and one reason only. BUT on the other hand, the more people that stay singing or not, it only shows on paper to the establishment that the place made money.. It doesn't say anywhere on there how many singers showed up. This number on paper is all the establishment cares about. We can have 10 people singing song after song all night long & drinking but this is not going to be enough for the bar to pay us every week, so they will dump the karaoke idea.
15. Kammo said on 5/31/13 - 02:09PM
. BUT if we have 40 people 10 singing & 30 stay for the dance music, we keep the bar for a place for you to go sing... I don't know how many of you take this in consideration when you complain about the music being played... I have to look at the numbers that go on paper because that is all the bar cares about to keep me there.
16. Michael said on 5/31/13 - 02:10PM
Michael Salazar Im just stating my opinion. I dont control the kj or the venue. You asked, and I answered.
17. Kammo said on 5/31/13 - 02:10PM
Kammo's Karaoke Oh I know Michael, I just wanted to explain my side of why I do what I do.. Everyone knows I play music in between karaoke songs, and this is why I do. BUT recently I have decided not to do it so much if it doesn't seem to be effecting the amount of people that are staying because of it. I didn't play any dance music last Saturday, only karaoke back to back, and we seemed to stay busy.. It really depends on if I get song requests or not.. But thank you for your input
18. Michael said on 5/31/13 - 02:11PM
Michael Salazar Not trying to come off harsh Kammo's Karaoke I love how you play music between singers. I have never heard you play a full song though
19. Kammo said on 5/31/13 - 02:11PM
Kammo's Karaoke Then you clearly don't come to many of my gigs LOL
20. Michael said on 5/31/13 - 02:12PM
Michael Salazar I haven't in awhile lo
21. Kammo said on 5/31/13 - 02:13PM
Kammo's Karaoke Oh I know...
22. Nikki said on 5/31/13 - 02:13PM
Nikki Rayzin Pch. I'm too awesome for in between music. It should be me me me all the time! Duh! People obviously only come to hear my awesomeness lol I know that's the very reason karaoke was invented! - said no one ever.
23. Kammo said on 5/31/13 - 02:14PM
ammo's Karaoke ROFLMAO!!! @ Nikki
24. Jason said on 5/31/13 - 02:14PM
Jason W Brooks Damn you with your perspectives and economics, Kammo's Karaoke ... I just want karaoke to be an imaginary place, where I get to sing as often as I like, and the few others all sing 80s hair band songs.. And sing them well
25. Kammo said on 5/31/13 - 02:15PM
Kammo's Karaoke BAHAHAHAHA
26. Ozz said on 5/31/13 - 02:16PM
Billy Beare Callmeozz Net If you play to much dance music you will not build a regular karaoke crowd. At least that is what I see in the various venues I go to.
27. Kammo said on 5/31/13 - 02:16PM
Kammo's Karaoke sure you will, just wont build a crowd of HARD CORE karaoke people. Just singers that are there for a good time and wont be asking over and over when they are up...
28. Kammo said on 5/31/13 - 02:16PM
Kammo's Karaoke Don't get me wrong here people, I'm NOT saying play a full song after every singer UNLESS its very slow... I usually do every 3 or 4 songs unless its busy, then its every 7 or 8 singers...
29. Jason said on 5/31/13 - 02:17PM
Jason W Brooks I can see why a KJ would want to appeal to dancers with a popular, full-length song once an hour or so...but I dislike the in-between clips, even if it's Kickstart My Heart....a few seconds of silence doesn't kill the mood...it's actually a welcome break, when folks can chat for a minute without shouting....and it often creates anticipation for the next singer/ song.
30. Nikki said on 5/31/13 - 02:18PM
Nikki Rayzin I would disagree. I think that the silence is awkward, and it usually happens when I'm saying something inappropriate
31. Kara said on 5/31/13 - 02:18PM
Kara Wraase Tirone Karaoke sucks... drunk sluts not knowing how to do the electric slide is way more entertainment... cmon guys get with the times..
32. Ozz said on 5/31/13 - 02:19PM
Billy Beare Callmeozz Net I think if there are more than 10 singers dance songs are inappropriate. You advertise karaoke not DJ music. That is what the dance clubs downtown are for. When a person only gets to come out once a week they get very upset when hey only sing a couple of times in the night and usually look for a better place. Just sayin what I hear all the time
33. Nikki said on 5/31/13 - 02:20PM
Nikki Rayzin If the objective is to sing a lot then they should be going to venues that aren't that busy. I've gone a few places that I've sang 15+ times a night. If that's your objective go there
34. Speed said on 5/31/13 - 02:21PM
Jonathan Lemke I play music in between singers but as filler music, I play songs and people get mad when I start the next singer cause I cut it off! My thing is keep the Karaoke vibe going! If they wanna dance, Dance to someone singin a song or go to a club!! I'm here to do karaoke and karaoke only! I hardly ever sing and when I do it's based on request or cause my rotation is slow! For every DJ song thats played it's time taken away from those who wanna sing! 2-3 min is a singer! I try to get as many peeps in in the shortest amount of time!
35. Lyle said on 5/31/13 - 02:23PM
Lyle Murdoc I would call myself a die hard karaokeer, and I think it sucks if the kj doesn't mix in some music. I prefer a break every rotation or so of slide music, and not the lame ass cupid shuffle. I'm talkin cool shit like "down south party, gangsta slide, biker shuffle, or the can't wang wit it."
36. Sandi said on 5/31/13 - 02:23PM
Sandi McDaniels I fully agree with Lyle, a short break between sets is a good thing....
37. Elizabeth said on 6/2/13 - 06:04PM
See, here's the thing. I'm hired as a KJ, so that to me is karaoke, I am not hired as a DJ. People come to karaoke to SING, and generally don't appreciate having to wait through a dance song to get to sing. I have heard the complaint about other venues, especially when there are a lot of singers. People will get up and dance is someone is singing a danceable song. If someone requests a line dance like "Electric Slide" I will probably sing it myself. But in the few (maybe 15 seconds) it takes to change singers, I tell jokes or stories or play with the crowd. They get to know me, I get to tease them and we have a good time. If I have a rotation of more than 10 I bow out of the rotation, but even if there are only 3 singers I keep it all karaoke.
38. Kammo said on 6/3/13 - 09:17PM
Well, I guess thats what makes all of our gigs what they are. We all do it different and most people know where they like to go because of it. We are not all the same and neither are the singers. To each his own... party on!
39. Ozz said on 6/10/13 - 04:06PM
Great point Kammo
40. KaraokeVibe said on 9/7/13 - 12:13PM
90% of the people come to sing, what I do is get them up as many times as possible. I have found this to increase the number of singers to the show. I will however play 2 or 3 line dance songs. But in my experience the crowd get cranky when they are not singing.
41. Sara Dix said on 11/17/13 - 09:54AM
I agree with Kammo on this one. It really depends where you go, and whicj KJ you like. I personally like having dance music in between songs, but that's just me. I think its a great way to interact and meet new people!
